A
Place for You at God’s Table
The
ELCA’s "Statement on the Practice of Word and Sacrament: The Use
of the Means of Grace" affirms the understanding that
"admission to the Sacrament (Holy Communion) is by invitation of the
Lord, presented through the Church, to those who are baptized"
(Principle 37). At Our Savior’s Lutheran Church we practice this
understanding by welcoming all to the table regardless of age. In doing
so, we acknowledge that the sacraments can only be received as a gift -
they are not given on the basis of what we know or understand or deserve,
but by the grace of God who gives all good things freely and abundantly.
The ELCA Statement goes on to say that "in all cases, participation
in Holy Communion is accompanied by catechesis appropriate to the age of
the communicant" (Application 37E). At OSLC we want to take this
charge seriously and so we are offering age appropriate communion
instruction in May.
Our
schedule is as follows:
Saturday,
May 10, 9:00-10:00 am
Instruction
for toddlers through kindergarten and their parents
Saturday,
May 10, 10:00-11:00 am
Instruction
for 1st through 3rd graders and their parents
Saturday,
May 10, 11:00-12:00 pm
Instruction
for youth in 4th grade and older
These
classes are not only for those new to the Communion table but also for
those who already commune as we all need to deepen our understanding and
appreciation of this sacrament. Since materials will be needed for the
children’s classes, we are asking that you sign up by April 28.
