No one puts up a Pentecost tree.
Hallmark card shops do not overflow with Pentecost cards. No one I know hides
Pentecost eggs. For much of the world that in some way observes Christmas and
Easter, Pentecost is just another day.
But for the church, it is our birthday and the
culmination of Christmas and Easter. Pentecost is a day of great joy and
celebration as we thank and praise God for God’s continuing presence and
abiding love. Without Pentecost the Child who is Emmanuel, God with us, would
be but a fond memory. Without Pentecost the Crucified and Risen Christ would be
but a story of hope from a distant past. But as the wind and tongues of fire
filled the room where the disciples had gathered and those from every nation
heard the Gospel proclaimed in their own language, the promise of Pentecost
became apparent: the Risen one is Emmanuel, is God with us, continuing his
redemptive and healing work here and now in our midst.
The winds of Pentecost continue to blow and the
tongues of fire continue to burn as God’s people continue to proclaim the
Good News in word and deed. It blows as we gather for worship and to study
God’s word and it blazes as we move out in service and witness.
This Pentecost as our congregation experiences
change and eagerly anticipates the future God is calling us into, let us unfurl
our sails and get caught and carried along by the Spirit. The Spirit is alive
and moving here at Our Savior’s! Thanks be to God!
Shalom,
